Jane made a strong (and reasonable) statement in favour of 'colleagues', so I have changed the terminology accordingly. It seems to work. Any calls for 'comrades'?

I vote against "contacts" -- way too corporate, impersonal, as you said--soulless, and, ultimately, (I think) meaningless. "Colleague" might work. To me it implies a sense of collaboration, of more than just "we know each other through work (or whatever)". Roget's agrees with me. Among the synonyms it lists: cohort, collaborator, partner, confederate, teammate, and, my favourite, partner in crime.
