About the Science and Development Network

The Science and Development Network (SciDev.net) has a great section on Science Communication. Many members of the Research Cooperative may find this of interest. SciDev.net has also worked with the World Federation of Science Journalists to create an Online Course in Science Journalism. We encourage members to visit the Science and Development Network to look for ways they can help.

SciDev.net also offers information on jobs available in many areas of science, science administration, and science communication, across the following focus regions: China, Latin America & Caribbean, Middle East & North Africa, South Asia, Southeast Asia, Sub-Saharan Africa

Dear Colleagues,
I hope all of you are well.
Please be aware of an upcoming meeting of the American Geophysical Union (AGU) called the "AGU Chapman Conference on Arsenic in Groundwater of Southern Asia." The conference is scheduled for March 24-27, 2009 in Siem Reap, Cambodia. Chronically high arsenic concentrations in groundwater slowly poison more than 100 million villagers in parts of southern Asia. Conference speakers will outline the geographic extent of the contamination, scientific and social aspects of the problem and procedures that may, someday, end this disaster. Please see the following link for a complete meeting agenda.
My best regards to all of you.

SciDev.Net's recent decision to dedidate a link and articles on issues affecting sub Saharan Africa was a welcome move. Indeed, the readership and leadership in Africa must have been awoken by the bits and pieces emanating from your correspondents across the continent.

This might elicit response, especially political will, to bring change regarding science and development issues. I hope you will continue to develop talent among journalists and researchers who want to make a contribution towards uplifting livelihoods in Africa.
